The unexpected expat blogger behind Ember Marble Vivid

Hi, I’m Sophia
Project manager, a parent, and an expat living in Portland, United States.
A few years ago I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually unfolded into a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to United States wasn’t part of the long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it started as a work opportunity and grew into something bigger.
The first months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Daily chores felt more complex than they should have.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. Yet gradually, habits took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt steady.
Why I Built Ember Marble Vivid
Most information online was either corporate relocation guidance or superficial tourism material. What was missing was an honest, everyday family perspective.
This site exists to fill that gap — practical guidance drawn from real life in United States.
What This Site Does (And Does Not)
This site is:
- Hands-on experience from living in United States
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated whenever a real change occurs
This site IS NOT:
- An official travel authority resource
- A paid-review platform
- Just another generic travel diary
Looking Forward
Our stay in United States continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Portland or anywhere in United States, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Best regards,
Sophia
